Fiore's animals

Prudence- judgement and thought knowing when to engage and attack
Elephant
Strength - This should be more "good mechanical structure" than brute strength. Body mechanics like a cut which engages your core muscles or a stable stance will do more for your ability to fence than simple force.
Lion
Courage - Holding yourself under pressure and committing with strikes. Maintaining a relaxed and comfortable posture allows faster and more versatile movement than white knuckles on your sword.
Movement
Pass forwards (step)
Return (step back)
Advancing (keep orientation)
Withdrawing (keep orientation)
Cuts
Downward Blows
Moves from teeth to knee. Ends in a low guard.
Middle Blows
Cuts through the middle of the downward/rising blows. True edge from the right, false edge from the left. Can be anywhere between knee and head.
Rising Blows
Moves from knee to middle of forehead. The reverse path a downward blow takes. Should be followed by a downward blow, but can rest at top in a long guard
Guards
Similar functioning guards across weapons have the same name. Although they look different, they are named by purpose. They can transition into others with a "turn in place" or a "half turn" Sword can make same 3 movements. Stable turn, half turn, full turn.
- Half turn, passing step and switch sides
- Full turn: Pivot 180 on one foot, step round
- Turn in place: pivot on spot, keeping feet where they are
These can combo. You can step and keep sword where it is, switch sword from left to right or front to back (turn in place in boar's tooth becomes long tail) Half turn lady can either be change sides or become backhand guard.
Powerful Guards
These provide stronger strikes.
Iron Gate Low guard, good for waiting. Can enter narrow play with a step. Covers from all angles.
Lady strikes from anywhere, covers too on left it can enter into narrow play. The right opposes boars tooth. Breaks guard with great blows. and ready for exchange of thrusts.
Fluid Guards
Fluid guards are deceptive and probing. They are used to test defences and understand your opponent.
Window- covers and strikes, moves quickly to and from this guard. Strong in thrusts. Threatens all guards.
Extended Strikes throat, good for thrusts. Deceptive, voids blows. Employs deception more than any other guard.
Shortened Deceptive, but not good to wait in unless you have a longer sword. More Effective In Armour
Two Horned locked in position so point cannot be moved off. can do same as Window, extended and frontale
Frontale Good for the cross, good against thrusts, can stop thrust/cut to Boars Tooth then attack into frontale again.
middle boars tooth boars tooth variation. can strike diagonally to displace opponents sword.
Stable Guards
Middle Iron Gate Defends well against narrow play. Strong for thrusts and downward blows (beat attack upwards, then cut)
Boars Tooth Probing guard. Thrusts to face without a step, and cuts to arms after. Point to face "traditional lunge" Defends well against narrow play.
Long Tail Can easily enter into other guards. Because of that, good to wait in. Can enter narrow play easily via a downward blow.
Wide Plays -Fiore leading feet are on same side- right to left. Sword matching. (think one steps and cuts, one stays and parries) Space to step off line without releasing pressure or giving up safety.
Narrow Plays -Fiore Same foot leading (right - right, left - left) reaction time matters. Can't leave exchange forwards without going through your opponent. Grapples and disarms common from here.
Fiore is a system. Although you can learn longsword alone, the rest of the manuscript builds to a larger and more comprehensive structure.
There are explicit cross references, but they are not an exhaustive list.
Most things you can do with dagger in reverse grip also apply to the hilt of a longsword.
