HEMA, or historical European martial arts is the recreation of fencing techniques through translations of manuscripts or, if you're lucky and know the right languages directly from the primary source. There's several flavours of fencing, mostly tied to their European country but this is Europe and so there is a lot of cross pollination and interplay.

HEMA has academic and physical aspects in good amounts, there's always a new direction or influence to examine when you plateau. New swords to learn if you need a different understanding. Manuals to look at while recovering from injury.

Modern I call it that but Victorian to WW I.

Systems: These are integrated systems, where multiple weapons are covered and techniques appear in one section but work in others. For example, Fiore dagger has a lot of things that translate to work with the sword hilt.
